When designing a golf course, one question often guides the process: how will it withstand the test of time? On Florida’s Treasure Coast, home to some of the state’s top courses, this question has inspired decades of exceptional golf design. Yet, a new wave of visionary architects and seasoned golf professionals is pushing the boundaries of the game even further. At Glynlea Country Club, 17-time PGA Tour champion Jim Furyk believes the key lies in one word – adaptability. With his debut course design, Jim Furyk is creating a course that meets the needs of today’s golfers while shaping the future of the game. Here’s a closer look at the innovative design set to open early 2025.
Furyk’s Vision: Golf for All Generations
Today’s players include not just low-handicap veterans but also families, women, and younger players eager to take up the game. Furyk’s design strikes a balance, offering challenges for seasoned players while remaining approachable for beginners. Spanning 4,249 to 6,755 yards, the course features four sets of tees to suit various skill levels. Breaking from tradition, it boasts five par fives and five par threes—an unconventional layout that enhances the experience for all. Par fives invite skilled players to chase birdies, while each par three is a carefully crafted challenge, blending playability with the natural beauty of Florida’s Treasure Coast.
Golf Design Features to Look For
The layout of the course was just the first element of its design. Furyk also emphasized bunkers as integral elements of the course’s character. Rather than viewing them as annoying obstacles, he sees bunkers as tools to help guide a player’s strategy, directing towards preferred angles of approach to the greens. The greens vary in size, thoughtfully designed to match the challenges of each hole. Forced carries are kept to a minimum, especially on mid to long-length holes, allowing golfers various options for approaching the putting services. Smaller, more guarded greens are strategically placed for shorter holes, where precision is essential, while longer and more demanding holes feature larger, more accessible greens with ample opportunities for chipping and putting.
A Place to Practice and Also Have Fun
The next generation of golfers are also honing their skills in new ways. Practice grounds are transforming into dynamic spaces that blend skill-building with immersive entertainment. At Glynlea Country Club, the illuminated Toptracer Aquatic Driving Range offers a cutting-edge experience that’s as engaging as it is effective. Using Toptracer technology, golfers can track their ball’s flight in real-time, gaining detailed insights into the distance, ball speed, and launch angle to refine their swings and monitor progress. Floating golf balls and greens add a playful challenge, while expert professionals provide guidance for players looking to improve. For those seeking a more casual experience, the range doubles as a social hub, offering a TopGolf-inspired atmosphere perfect for friendly competition or a fun outing with friends.
10 Acres of Club Amenities to Enjoy
Glynlea Country Club isn’t just redefining golf, however. It’s reimagining the entire country club experience. Breaking away from the traditional single-clubhouse model, Glynlea’s amenities will span an impressive 10 acres. The state-of-the-art Fitness Center will feature advanced cardio and strength equipment, supporting every wellness journey. Outdoors, tennis and pickleball courts will encourage friendly competition and foster a thriving community of players. Two distinct pools—a resort-style pool for relaxation and a lap pool for fitness—offer something for everyone, complete with sun-drenched lounge areas. Rounding out the experience, Fairways Tavern will serve up craft cocktails and flavorful dishes.
